Copier Careers Publishes First Ever Salary Survey of Copier Sales Reps

For more than a decade, Copier Careers has been publishing yearly salary surveys for three categories of copier industry employee: service techs, service managers, and sales managers. This year for the first time we’ve published a fourth: the 2011 Sales Representative Salary Survey. Nearly 10,000 copier sales reps from dealerships all over the country told us how much they make and shared their opinions on the state of the industry. Key findings included:

  • Great earning potential. More than 60 percent of survey respondents say they are making more than $100,000 annually. The top-earning job title was Major Account Manager.

  • Excitement about MPS. With the exception of a few old-school holdouts, most copier sales representatives are loving Managed Print Services. In addition to creating new income opportunities, MPS provides real value to customers and makes for a more challenging and interesting sales process.

  • Too many buckets. According to many respondents, the complexity of sales compensation plans has gotten out of hand. This situation has created frustration for many sales reps and has contributed to a growing distrust of management.

THE TOP 5... Tips for Being Happier at Work

Tips from the trenches to keep your copier career on track

A growing body of research finds a close link between happiness and productivity: the people who are most satisfied with their jobs are also the best performers, and vice versa. For most people, though, happiness isn’t automatic. Regardless of how good your job is or how much money you make, happiness has to be cultivated. Here are a few tips to help you find more joy in your daily grind:

  1. Decide to be happy. Popular wisdom tells us you’re either happy or you’re not, but the truth in many cases is that happiness at work is a choice. Most copier industry employees spend at least 50 hours a week on the job, but whether that time commitment is a burden or a blessing is up to you. You can decide to spend day after day counting down the hours to quitting time (or the years to retirement), or you can decide to spend your days enjoying the physical, psychological, and intellectual challenges work throws your way. The choice is yours. Just remember, it really is a choice.

  2. Set your own career goals — and meet them. Your managers set benchmarks and performance goals for you, but why stop there? Set small, attainable goals for yourself as well, and take active steps to meet them. You could work on a new certification, read industry magazines or business books, connect with old coworkers on LinkedIn, attend networking events or industry conferences...the options are endless. Taking small measures to improve your knowledge and advance your career will make you feel more involved and will help you gain more control over your own career path.

  3. Do something you like every day. Not everybody is in a job they love — that’s why they call it work, right? But no matter how you feel about your job in general, there is bound to be something about it that you like. Whatever that thing is, try to do it every day. It will help you get through all the not-so-fun parts of your job.

  4. Avoid negative people. Complaining is hardly ever productive and it is usually self-perpetuating: instead of leading to solutions, it merely leads to more complaining. We all do it once in awhile, but some people do it all the time. Avoid these people. They’re practically guaranteed to bring you down.

  5. Look for a new job. If all else fails and you just can’t seem to find any happiness at work, then you’re probably in the wrong job. Find a better fit at http://www.copiercareers.com.

SOUND OFF: Our readers speak

In November, we asked our readers whether they think careers in copier service have changed over the past decade. Here’s what they told us:

Is copier service a better career today than it was ten years ago?

Yes, it’s a better career now: 85% (1122 votes)
No, things were better before: 11% (152 votes)
Neither — the job hasn’t really changed: 4% (55 votes)

Our readers had plenty to say about the topic:

“Copier service is no longer just working on the box. You must be savvy about computers, networks, faxes, and copier machines. The challenges have expanded exponentially beyond the compensation, but it’s still a good, steady career.”

“It’s a great career. Technology has demanded that companies train employees in IT, digital, color, and basic computer skills. This is a great benefit to employees, as it improves their abilities and worth to the employer. Gone are the days when strong mechanical skills could get you by on the job. As a result, employers are willing to pay a little more for the right employee. Customer skills and computer/IT are in high demand. Bonuses, trips, sick days, personal days, vacation time, 401(k), and healthcare are just some of the benefits for today’s service technicians and managers. If employees work smart, they’ll be rewarded.”

“I’ve been in this business for 25 years. The career itself is better, but the cost of living has risen so much that I’ve made less money during the past ten years. Healthcare is probably the major cause.”

“All the tracking is nerve-wracking. There is so much pressure to achieve unreasonable numbers that field technicians don’t know how to do their jobs anymore.”

“Management doesn’t realize how its reliance on numbers has affected the way field techs interact with customers. We have started thinking more about numbers and less about what is best for the customer.”

“I have to do training on my own time. Before, I always used to get paid for it.”

“I am compensated better and the job isn’t as dirty as it used to be now that most parts are modular and disposable.”

“Technicians are now being asked to be certified on CompTIA A+ and N+. With the increase in knowledge required in 2011, I don’t see a 2-3 percent pay raise as much to celebrate about. It’s longer hours now for less pay.”

“For those techs who are willing to keep up with the technology, it’s a lot more fun than it was ten years ago.”

“There are many more opportunities out there now for the technician to advance to. Managed print services, managed network services, document management, or just service management. The machines are also much more intelligent and therefore easier to troubleshoot.”

“I’ve been in this business 43 years, so all the new technology is hard for me to keep up with. I’m glad retirement is on the horizon.”

“We’re being tracked with GPS to make sure we aren’t loafing. This is better?”

“In the San Francisco Bay Area, a recent posting wanted an experienced tech with A+ and Net+ and 5 years experience. They pay scale was $9.50 to $13.50 with benefits. Unemployment and food stamps pays $12.75.”
