  THE FEED

For service managers, 2011 a year of stress and frustration

Copier Careers has just released our 2011 Service Manager Salary Survey! The survey reflects the responses of 1,621 operations managers, general managers, VPs of service, regional service managers, and service managers from copier dealerships around the nation. A few key findings from the survey:

  • Average annual compensation has increased by $1,442 since 2010, for a total of $77,237. “Operations manager” is the highest-earning job title, and “service managers” the lowest.

  • The weak economy and the managed services business model have combined to create a perfect storm of unpredictability for service managers. Many of the old benchmarks simply do not apply anymore.

  • Job satisfaction has suffered significantly over the past several months, and many service managers are on the lookout for fresh job opportunities. A whopping 99 percent of them say they’re either actively or passively searching for a new position.

THE TOP 7... Reasons not to connect with coworkers on Facebook

Tips from the trenches to keep your copier career on track

In real life, the line separating friends from coworkers is often thin. In the realm of social networking, it can disappear entirely. While most of us have the good sense not to become Facebook friends with our bosses, many of us don’t exercise the same caution when deciding whether to connect with our coworkers. Here are a few reasons why we should:

  1. Facebook is a personal networking site, not a professional one. Some people manage to keep their Facebook content clean, positive, and professional at all times. If you’re one of those rare individuals, great! But if you’re like most people, your professional reputation isn’t your first priority while you’re logged into Facebook. (Farmville is! Of course.)

  2. Your personal life doesn’t belong in the office. When you friend your coworkers, there’s no way to separate the personal from the professional. Thing you consider completely innocent (like posting a music video, sharing a comedy clip, or uploading a photo of yourself at a bar) might be offensive to some of the people you work with. Avoid problems by keeping them off your friend list.

  3. You use Facebook while you’re at work. It’s one thing to slack off on the job once in awhile; it’s another thing to leave digital proof that you’ve been ignoring your duties, especially now when so many dealerships are short-staffed. Still worse is complaining about your job online. Even vague comments like “I hate Mondays” or “Can’t wait until the work week is over” could be viewed as being negative.

  4. Coworkers talk. You might be careful about which coworkers you choose to be friends with on Facebook. But how careful are those other people? They could easily mention your Facebook activities to your boss or another coworker. If you wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing the content of your Facebook page directly with your boss, you shouldn’t share it with anyone else who can.

  5. Today’s coworkers are tomorrow’s supervisors. It may seem safe to share your online life with the people you work with, but what happens when one of those people gets promoted? Suddenly, your professional relationship with that person has changed, but your level of online sharing is still the same.

  6. Today’s coworkers are tomorrow’s subordinates. Alternatively, you might be the one who gets promoted. Do you want your employees to have such easy access to your personal life? And do you really need such instant access to theirs?

  7. Friending is easy. Defriending is rude. It may be awkward to reject a friend request from a coworker, though most people will understand if you explain that you have a policy of keeping your personal and professional lives separate. But discovering later that you need to “de-friend” that person could be a career killer.

SOUND OFF: Our readers speak

In July, we asked you whether you thought total compensation for service managers has changed over the past year. Here’s what you said:

Do you think compensation for service managers has changed since 2010?

No, service manager pay has not changed since last year: 72% (913 votes)
Yes, service manager pay has decreased: 18% (227) votes
Yes, service manager pay has increased: 10% (123 votes)

You can get the real story by reading our 2011 Copier Careers Service Manager Salary Survey, available in the August issue of ENX Magazine or online at http://copiercareers.com/salary_surveys.shtml. In the meantime, here are a few comments from our readers:

“Compensation is way down when you count the extra workload due to cutbacks and layoffs.”

“I’ve worked harder and longer days, but I’ve made more money.”

“I made the same as last year, and I know how lucky I am.”

“I am not a service manager, but I work closely with them each day. In our industry, the sales team builds the company and market share and service retains the clients. If companies continue to squeeze the most important resources, they will lose them and their market share.”

“My company has lowered the salary of everyone who isn’t a VP or President. Our executives are receiving huge bonuses.”

“My pay is down 3 percent.”

“I took a big hit three years ago, but am about level now.”

“Our industry appears to be on the rebound. Managers are asked to find more sources of revenue and expense reductions. Those that do succeed and prosper. Those that don’t—well, let’s just say their pay hasn’t changed.”

“The phrase ‘Thank you sir, may I have another?’ was originally invented by a service manager after his salary and the number of his staff were reduced.”

“Pay has stagnated but the cost of living always increases, so if you are standing still you are going backwards.”

“This industry as a whole underpays.”

“The economy is bad, so I took a pay cut to help the company. I hope my loyalty is rewarded at a later date.”

“Our company involves the field managers in monthly financial reviews with our CFO so they can understand where the opportunities are to improve. Field managers are the key reason why our service department is so profitable. If the company makes its goals, everyone shares in the profits — not just upper management.”
