New copier-printers champion versatilityYou've all seen the ads: "Laser Printer Copier Scanner Fax." Major manufacturers of copiers have been battling to become the most versatile and solution-specific. Ricoh, West Caldwell, N.J., has introduced the Aficio 1515/1515F/1515MF, basically the same 15 pages-per-minute (PPM) copier-printer model with the F adding fax capability and the MF adding network scanning and multifunctional capability for the small office user, including the embedded scan to e-mail function. The suggested retail price of the Aficio 1515 is $1,950, Aficio 1515F is $2,400 and the Aficio 1515MF is $2,600. Ricoh is also introducing the Aficio 3131, a full-color digital imaging system with a speed of 31 PPM in full color and black and white. The soon-to-be introduced copier-printer garnered the BERTL (Business Equipment Research & Test Laboratories) " Best Affordable High-Speed Graphic Arts Device" since it was marketed before Jan. 1. Both the Aficio 3131 and the price will be unveiled June 28. Speaking of awards, Canon USA, Lake Success, N.Y., and DCA Advertising received a Gold EFFIE award in the "Office Products and Services" category for an advertising campaign promoting Canon's office copier and printer products. The New York American Marketing Association presents the EFFIE awards to recognize the year's most effective advertising campaigns that meet and exceed advertising objectives. Dentsu, an advertising conglomerate headquartered in Tokyo, owns DCA Advertising. Konica Minolta Business Solutions, Windsor, Conn. has embedded controllers in many of its digital copier-printers and imaging systems, which the company spokesmen tout as reducing the controller space and cost. Konica Minolta, in coordination with Electronics For Imaging, Foster City, Calif., recently announced the availability of the embedded IP-921 Fiery Print Controller for its ColorFORCE 8050 and CF5001 Imaging Systems. It's becoming prestigious to sell digital copiers in the state of Arkansas. Fortune 500 companies such as Wal-Mart and Tyson Foods call the Razorback State home. That was noted recently when Imagistics International, Trumbull, Conn., announced it had acquired Copy Systems, a digital copier dealership based in Little Rock, Arkansas. Canon takes aim at color copier line-up Canon Japanese headquarters announced it was expanding its line of
multifunctional color copiers to try to seize the color copier market in
the United States and Europe. In
Japan, Canon color models comprise about 40 percent of the multifunctional
color and in the United States and Europe, only at 20 percent. Worldwide,
sales of the color Canon MFPs grew 40 percent in 2003. Canon officials say they hope to increase the 10 percent color
share in the United States to roughly 30 percent in 2005. The cost of marketing is eternal vigilance What
is that genius that brings about more sales and puts a little zest into an
otherwise idea-flat world? Creativity. Creativity in marketing will result form brainstorming, taking
advantage of new opportunities and making the most of the opportunities
that do exist. And creativity isn't always in what you see. Have you
considered audio and visual aids to help customers remember who you are
instead of a business card that ends up tossed in a drawer? The
fax letterhead may need enhanced to show all your products. The local
event could have potential for a document-imaging sponsor. With a watchful
eye and being vigilant for opportunity, marketing creativity can lead to
new avenues for products. Want

Industry Firm's sons bring in copier business from the cold
Mid-June was a cool 67 degrees 15 miles from the Canadian border in
Caribou, Maine, but winters can bring weather 10-20 degrees below zero for
two to five days. "In
order to stop or cripple us, we would need 24 inches of snow," said Phil
Levesque, president of Levesque Office Supply, a Caribou copier
dealership, "and if that happens over a couple of days, nothing happens to
us." Levesque Office Supply is a second-generation dealership that also
sells office supplies, furnishings and point-of-sale systems to 6,000
square miles of primarily Maine customers. "You have to sell a solution
and a concept," Levesque said. "We really enjoy the challenge." Eva
and Reno Levesque started the business in 1963 on $75 and passed it to
Phil, Tom and Pete, the three sons who own, operate and manage the
company. Loss
of a nearby Air Force base whittled the 25-person staff to a dozen in the
'90s, but the company is re-hiring with a Copier Careers assist. Said
Levesque: "We had one good candidate within 48 hours and I was really
impressed with that."
Xerox snags award for tight-lipped copiers We
know in this security-conscious world that "loose lips sink ships," but
did you know that machines that know how to keep government secrets
receive awards? The
coveted international standard in security assessments was given for
security features on six office multifunction systems of Xerox, Stamford,
Conn. The
WorkCentre M35, M45 and M55 copier-printers and WorkCentre Pro 35, 45 and
55 multifunctionals received the National Information Assurance
Partnership's Common Criteria Certification. It's an
internationally-recognized standard for security claims of information
technology products and systems. Showing how well a machine can keep secrets was also demonstrated
at the General Services Administration Expo May 11-13 in Orlando, Fla.
Scanning 39 government documents per minute to a CD on a desktop system in
tandem with the copier-based imageRUNNER 3320G, a 33 PPM digital
monochrome MFP was demonstrated recently by Canon USA, Lake Success, N.Y.
Famous copier salesman may hear, 'You're hired' Copier Salesperson Nick Warnock may have been fired by one of the
best-known businessmen in the United States, but he's been offered a slot
to sell suites for the Oakland Raiders in the Oakland Coliseum. It's
too early to tell if the former college football player will take the
deal. Negotiations between the Xerox salesman and the Oakland Raiders
hadn't produced a hire as of mid-June. Warnock, of Bayonne, N.J., brought copier salesmanship to new
visibility during the airing of NBC's "The Apprentice," a reality show
featuring 16 candidates vying to work for Donald Trump. Warnock was beat out in the last episode by Bill Rancic, who will
work with Trump to build a 90-story building in Chicago. Copier Careers wants you to pass this on!
